On average, the power goes out about three times per week. Sometimes the power is out for just 30 minutes but sometimes it can be out for as long as one or two days. Power outages are not only typical at the center but also all over Kampala and Uganda. Power outages occur usually due to a surge, shortage of fuel or government regulation. Fortunately, almost all classes that occur at the center ( with the exception of Wednesday night worship) occur during the day. Thus, natural sunlight provides the needed light for all ESL and other classes to continue. The lack of power does prohibit computer ( and sometimes sewing) classes to continue. This is particularly frustrating for students who make the commitment to come to class ( with their own transport money) and are unable to complete a class session due to a power outage. It is also really frustrating to staff who plan or teach these classes as well as who need their computers in order to do their daily operational tasks.
Power outages are sure to continue, as that is part of life here in Uganda. The center, however, would be able to ensure that classes continue with power with an inverter. The total cost of an inverter is around $2,000 USD. Although it is an expensive investment, the investment that will take place in the students who are able to attend classes is priceless. Our priority is investing in individuals in the center community by providing them with the love and hope of Christ, life skills and an extended community of people who love them. The inverter would allow for the increase of class attendance and center activities so that God's empowerment and transformation can take place in the lives of refugees in Kampala.
Would you consider making a donation to help Refuge and Hope buy an inverter for the Center of Hope in Kampala?
