Our main reason for the trip was to meet the 30 sponsored secondary students in DRC. We have been praying for them for the past two years, and it was amazing to finally meet them. We met the eight Goma students across the border in Gisenyi, Rwanda, then met the remaining Rwankuba students in their small town in the mountains of eastern Congo. We traveled with Patrick, the coordinator of R&H’s program, and Pastor Bamuleke, who is originally from Rwankuba. The students were very reserved, but Patrick knew how to make them laugh! We gave them photos and letters from our youth at First Baptist Church in Winchester, VA and they wrote messages back. The students are so appreciative of the opportunity to have an education. Secondary education if out of reach for so many in DRC because of school fees that seem minimal to many of us here.
The rest of the time we stayed in Kampala and volunteered at the Center. We love spending time at the Center because of the sense of community there. We saw many of the same students in two or three different classes! You can tell it is a place that the students love. Stephen taught an Excel class, and Courtney filled in with English classes and tutoring.
The best experience in Kampala was tutoring three Sudanese co-wives in their home. They were so warm and hospitable, and it was great to get to know them and their children.
We feel very fortunate to be a part of R&H’s ministries in east and central Africa, especially the program in DRC. We believe in their programs and their focus on investing in INDIVIDUALS. By focusing holistically in these individuals, they can see true transformations in their lives.
