Independence for South Sudan!

Antonio Guterres, the U.N High Commissioner for Refugees once said, While every refugee's story is different and their anguish personal, they all share a common thread of uncommon courage – the courage not only to survive, but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives." Refuge and Hope strives to work with those who have been deeply affected by war and conflict, serving them in both physical and spiritual needs. One of the countries represented at the Center of Hope is Sudan. This country, the largest in Africa, underwent over two decades of brutal civil war in which over 2 million people perished.

In the week long referendum which began on January 9th 99% of the population of South Sudan voted for independence. The referendum was the culmination of a process set in motion by a 2005 peace deal. On February 7th, Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan said that his government would recognize the outcome of the vote. What a historic moment for the people of South Sudan!

We at Refuge and Hope pray that in the midst of this established peace that the country and church will grow as those who have been refugees return home. South Sudan has a huge task ahead as the government learns development and the people learn how to put down roots again. Though the Darfur region remains embroiled in conflict we rejoice with the South Sudanese people who finally have independence! Congratulations! Our prayers and support are with you as you continue to rebuild South Sudan.
