For three days a few weeks ago, Missy, Harriet, and I were able to help host a youth conference while the students were on break at the Center. There were a mixture of secondary students from Uganda, Sudan, and Congo that came together to discuss various aspects of unity and leadership.
The first day Missy led discussion on equality. Focusing on gender roles in family, education and political aspects, the students opened up with their opinions to questions like, “Who should complete housework?” There were many differing views to the questions; however, the students were challenged to listen and learn from other people’s point of views. At the end of the day, we saw students really challenged as to why they took a certain standpoint but out of that a deeper respect and better understanding of the different cultures.
The second day we focused on self-esteem, perseverance, trust, and confidence in a leadership role. Team-building activities really helped the students work together strengthen relationships among them. They were posed with several questions, one being “If you could tell the whole world one thing, what would it be?” Each of their answers dealt with love, unity or peace. Check out the video below.
On the last day the student had the opportunity to debate on the best way to change Africa. The proposing side argued that educating people is the most effective way, while the opposing side argued that a change in leadership would be best for change. Throughout the entire debate, I found myself impressed and challenged that this group of students truly had a desire to change and improve their nation, Africa, and the world!
It is our prayer that leaders will rise up in this next generation, because they are a vital part of the future!
